ADVANCED NAVIGATION

ADVANCED NAVIGATION

Many B-12 events are navigation-intensive, so a good portion of our training focuses on advanced techniques for accomplishing navigation without the usual tools. Earlier today, Hannah Kuegler got a chance to try out some methods of navigating that are not even taught in ROTC.

Our philosophy is that a soldier should be able to accomplish any mission with the minimal equipment required, in case the usual extra equipment is lost or broken.

To that end, Kuegler received advanced instruction and training in plotting points and determining azimuths without using a protractor, and even in navigating without a compass. We also covered the tricks of the trade in utilizing various handheld, smartphone, and vehicle-based GPS systems.

Later this summer we will be holding a night land navigation exercise, where B-12 members will have to use these skills in the dark.
